Sweet and Sour Chicken

This chicken is SO good.  I just tried this recipe out tonight, and felt like I had just been out to a restaurant.  This chicken is lightly breaded, and teamed up with the perfect sweet, sour, and tangy-goodness sauce!  Folks, this one is a keeper.

3-4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
Salt and Pepper
1 cup cornstarch
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup canola oil

Sauce (double if you like extra sauce for rice):
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup ketchup
1/2 cup vinegar
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp garlic salt

1.  Cut chicken into chunks and season with salt and pepper.  Dip chicken in cornstarch and then egg.
2.  Fry chicken in oil until brown, but not cooked through.
3.  Place in a single layer in a baking dish.
4.  Mix sauce ingredients and pour over chicken.
5.  Bake for one hour at 325 F, turning chicken every 15 minutes so it is evenly coated.  Serve over rice.

  1. I love the way your chicken turned out. I remember this sweet and sour recipe, that was really popular as far back, as the seventies. I used this to make sweet and sour pork with it. Thanks for recapturing great memories, and for sure I will use this for chicken, and probably for shrimp too. Please check out my blog too.

  2. I adore orange chicken (my husband and I go to Panda Express when we're feeling like really giving into our guilty pleasure) But this looks so much better than what we could order out...and so much healthier too (I don't even want to see the long ingredient list at some of those Chinese fast food places). I'm glad I found your blog...thanks for sharing!

  3. MMM!! My daughter has been requesting just such a dish. With no afterschool activities tonight, my husband returning from a 2 week trip we just may get a family dinner. Thanks for the post!

  4. This looks delicious...sometimes dishes like this are the only thing that will hit the spot, and it's so nice to be able to make them at home instead of going out! I like that it's baked...great easy weeknight meal. Yum!

  5. I'll take mine with the sauce on the side - this looks good!

  6. cook it and then bake it...this is yumm. have you tried this with pork?

  7. What a fun idea to have a food blog. I'll be one of your most faithful followers.

  8. Oh my! We just went to eat dinner at Red Bowl tonight and my sister-in-law ordered this. And I was thinking to myself too bad that I don't know how to cook it since I like it better than General Tsao's chicken - which was my order!

Nice blog , very nice pictures!

  9. I made this tonight and we were SOOO impressed!! Nathanael said that it was way better than any sweet and sour chicken he had ever had at any restaurant. That's impressive!!

  10. Could you tell me the approximate weight of the chicken in the recipe. I used tenders so I just guessed as to weight. Thanks for your site. Joe
